      We are seeking a sales director who will be reporting directly to the publisher and president.

      Who We Are:  School Wise Press has won national and state awards helping educators make sense of school facts. We serve California public school district leadership by bringing assessment consultants and expertise to their side, and by publishing their annual school accountability reports. We've been in business since 1995 and have worked for than one-fourth of California's districts. All who work here share pride in setting the highest standards for putting top-quality assessment wisdom to work producing results and for reporting schools' results effectively and professionally.

      Our company is rolling out a unique consulting service: the Owl Corps. It joins together an elite team of recognized California assessment experts who between them have 175 years of professional experience, two of whom have been past presidents of the California Educational Research Association (CERA) and all of whom have received recognition in their regions. Owl Corps' flagship service boosts public school districts' assessment abilities and successes with an original business model that provides higher-quality expertise than they have on hand and at a lower cost than they currently pay. The service is budgeted to gross $500,000 in the next twelve months, with steep growth in the following two years.

      Scope of Work:  The work requires taking qualified leads from the start of the sales process to close. Maintaining relationships with current clients is as important as building relationships with new prospects. The director will use telephone, e-mail and face-to-face interactions to succeed. The more specific elements of the work will include:

      Ø      Prospect, qualify and close new opportunities. Learn strategies and targets, and use that knowledge to close new school district and other accounts.

      Ø      Manage, maintain and grow current SWP district client relationships and renew business with them.

      Ø      Manage a sales cycle of 3 to 6 months.

      Ø      Introduce clients to the new assessment services of Owl Consulting team. Clearly articulate the value proposition and the uniqueness of the firm's solutions.

      Ø      Lead on-line and face-to-face presentations.

      Ø      Develop and deliver proposals for professional services engagements.

      Ø      Attend trade shows and conferences. Actively engage attendees and initiate conversations with qualified prospects.

      Candidate Qualifications Desired:  The right candidate will have at least three years in business-to-business sales and proven success proposing, presenting and discussing business solutions and moving opportunities through the sales cycle. Experience selling consulting or other professional services is highly relevant, and strong business acumen will increase chances for successful selling. We prefer people with work experience in an education-related field.

      Sales methods are consultative selling, and our sales trainer is part of the interview team.The right candidate will be comfortable in both a professional service setting and a technology-intensive publishing setting, and welcomes the opportunity to work in a small company. Organizational and communication skills – both written and verbal – are essential to this position. 

      The territory is the state of California. Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time.

      Basic skills: Candidates should be highly skilled at listening to and under­standing client needs and in eliciting clients to trust them to share their key challenges. To be successful, a Sales Director needs to have a range of sales skills across the full cycle, from opening, to presentation, to closing. The right candidate knows how to work well with district decision makers, influ­encers and recommenders, as well as support staff and with the retired superintendents, who work with us as door-openers. The ideal candidate is comfortable working both as part of a sales and marketing team and as a lone ranger.

      We prefer candidates who are familiar with spreadsheets and sales database tools, and have a willingness to share the work of updating information.

      Work Environment:  This is a small consulting publishing company, currently employing about ten staff. Sales support will be provided by a business analyst and a sales assistant. The right candidate will also enjoy the close teamwork a small company setting can offer. We will provide ample opportunities to learn. Candidates should also feel at ease in a small office setting, and should enjoy the opportunity of growing a company. The business is located in the Ocean Avenue corridor in San Francisco, and is accessible by Muni's "K" street car line. A BART stop, Balboa Park, is less than one mile from the office, and is well served by the "K" streetcar. There is ample parking within two blocks of the office.

      Compensation:  The pay will be commensurate with performance. Base salary and commission plan are competitive. Medical benefits for the employee for included (Kaiser), as are ten vacation days.
