      PHOTO DOCUMENTARY OF CALIFORNIA SCHOOL
      BUILDINGS IN DISTRESS NOW ON-LINE

Free Web site offers a look at California school facilities problems:
crowding, portables and the results of maintenance deferred far too long

SAN FRANCISCO, February 24 -- Californians can now see evidence of
      school
buildings in distress. The effects of crowding and deferred maintenance
      are
depicted in these photographs of schools from around the state.

The documentary presents the words of the students, teachers and parents
      who
are most affected by the crowding and decay that are now too common in
public schools. The work can be seen on-line by going to:

      http://www.learningbricks.com

The on-line photo-documentary includes an essay by Peter Schrag, and
      photographs by photo-journalists and filmmakers.

The work is the creation of School Wise Press, an independent publisher.
Steve Rees, editor and publisher of School Wise Press, affirmed, "It is
      time for
us to show-and-tell. These photographs show the reality so many
      California
students live with, day in, day out. Their words tell the story most
      poignantly."

The on-line documentary is intended to incorporate new work in the
      months
ahead. Exemplary school architecture will soon be added to the site,
      both
      new construction and modernization projects.

Site visitors will find a host of additional resources available.

The editorial project has no relation to Let's Fix Our Schools, the
coalition that is working for the passage of Proposition 26. But the
timeliness of the launch enables voters who are studying the issue to
      consider new information
      before deciding.

Based in San Francisco, School Wise Press is a privately held publishing
company specializing in California school information (grades K-12). It
      has
been helping parents get smart about California schools since 1995. Its
services include books, custom reports (school profiles) and a Web site,
www.schoolwisepress.com. The company also licenses school data services
      to
      newspapers and Web sites.
