      Aspire Public Schools now operates 21 schools in six California communities – East Palo Alto, Modesto, Oakland, Stockton, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. We plan to reach sustainability by 2020, relying solely on public funding to operate more than 60 schools.

      GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: The Business Analyst will play a key role performing a wide range of activities to improve tools and processes in support of school site practitioners throughout Aspire Public Schools.

      The emphasis of this role is to work effectively with teachers, office managers, principals and other school site team members to understand, prioritize and reengineer current practices and tools – advising where technology can boost student achievement and relieve inefficiencies to reclaim time for school site staff. The business analyst is responsible for developing an empathetic understanding of the challenges faced by school site staff, capturing requirements, evaluating options, and working with a school site staff, technical teams and project teams to develop process and tool solutions. The ideal candidate will have K-12 experience, broad knowledge of software development and implementation lifecycles, and strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills. This is an opportunity for someone who is passionate about academic achievement for all children and has experience in business analysis and education.


      1. Understand and represent school site activities

      • Use a variety of techniques to develop an empathetic understanding of current school site activities within Aspire; techniques may include interviews, focus groups, surveys, job shadow and other approaches

      • Develop functional requirements for software tools

      • Analyze and document current and future business process models

      • Analyze and document task models that accurately represent a cross section of a particular end-user community

      2. Drive development of technology solutions to reclaim time for school site and enhance school site effectiveness

      • Develop a research-based approach to meeting goals

      • Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, developers and designers on scope, solutions, constraints and risks

      • Provide project status to project leads

      • Act as the intermediary for communication between school sites and project development teams

      • Interact with external and internal personnel at various levels of management in all areas of the organization

      • Perform feasibility analysis and research `buy or build' options

      • Lead new technology pilots and business process reengineering projects

      • Identify technology solutions that will best meet business needs

      • Lead user acceptance testing

      3. Other responsibilities

      • Contribute to developing a framework for prioritizing needs and gauging effectiveness of resources invested

      • Perform other duties as assigned

      ORGANIZATION RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Director of Operations. Works closely with all levels of staff across all functional areas of the organization, including school sites and Home Office. Manages outside consultants/vendors.


      1. Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

      • Solid understanding and appreciation of how technology contributes to driving organizational value

      • Able to independently, collaboratively and quickly address complex problems, gather and document business requirements, write specifications, create and execute deployment plans, and organize a large number of changing variables

      • Highly organized and thorough, with an ability to facilitate activities among different levels of staff

      • Strong communication, writing, presentation, facilitation and interpersonal abilities to manage business expectations with cross-functional teams, express complex technical concepts both verbally and in writing, and work with a non-technical colleagues

      • Demonstrated experience developing, leading and managing successful project teams, including vendors

      • Able to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a dynamic,
      fast-paced environment

      • Seen as optimistic, creative, customer oriented, diplomatic and persuasive

      • Quantifiable, repeated success developing solutions that have saved money and improved quality

      • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills; fluent in a variety of qualitative and quantitative problem solving approaches

      • Experience developing Business Intelligence, Knowledge Management and/or Operational Transaction solutions

      • Experience developing reports and supporting analysis using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and Tableau and other reporting and analysis tools, such as Crystal reports, Business Objects, Cognos and Performance Point Server.

      • Fluent in Microsoft Word, SQL, Visio, Excel, Project and

      • Experience training and mentoring staff a plus

      2. Minimum education level:

      • Bachelor's degree in education, business, technology, information sciences, communication or related discipline

      • MBA or other relevant master's degree strongly preferred

      3. Experience required:

      • 3+ years as a business analyst contributing to the development of technology solutions

      • 2+ years in a K-12 environment preferred
