      WestEd, a nonprofit research, development, and service agency, works
      with education and other communities to promote excellence, achieve
      equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. While
      WestEd serves the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah as one
      of the nation's Regional Educational Laboratories, our agency's work
      extends throughout the United States and abroad. WestEd has 16 offices
      nationwide, from Washington and Boston to Arizona, Southern California,
      and its headquarters in San Francisco.

      The goal of the Comprehensive School Assistance Program (CSAP) at WestEd
      is to make a significant contribution to closing the achievement gap in
      American education between racial and ethnic groups, English learners and
      native speakers of English, and students from low-income families and
      their more economically advantaged peers. To accomplish this goal, CSAP
      staff members work to build the capacity of schools, school districts, and
      state departments of education to improve educational programs for
      students on the wrong side of the achievement gap. In addition, program
      staff are expected to contribute to the knowledge base on turning around
      low performing schools and to use the knowledge they have gained in
      their work to inform local, state and national policy makers.

      English Learners and the Language Arts, a Project of CSAP: English
      Learners and the Language Arts (ELLA) professional development program
      provides K-8 teachers and administrators with tools to effectively
      plan and deliver literacy instruction to English learners and other
      diverse students. ELLA provides intensive training and on-site coaching
      to teachers and literacy coaches in implementing research-based effective
      instructional practices for English learners.

      Position Description

      Provide training and coaching to teachers in implementing effective
      instructional strategies for EL students. Provide support to principals
      and instructional coaches to ensure that effective strategies are
      strategically and consistently implemented school-wide.


      Provide presentations and on-site technical assistance, including
      teaching demonstrating lessons in classrooms, observing classroom
      instruction and providing feedback to teachers, coaching principals and
      instructional coaches, and assisting schools and districts in
      instructional planning and long and short term goal-setting.

      Help design and present professional development to meet the needs of
      individual schools and districts.

      Keep abreast of current research on effective practices in the area of
      literacy instruction for English learners and English/second language
      development and instruction.

      Work with other WestEd programs and outside entities on projects that
      promote high achievement for English learners, such as curriculum
      development, language assessment, and school/district program improvement.

      Extensive travel required, including frequent site visits to schools
      across California and occasional visits to other states.

      -A minimum of five years experience as a classroom teacher in K-8
      classrooms with large populations of English Learners.
      -Current valid California Teaching Credential required.
      -Extensive knowledge of the 2007 California Reading/Language Arts
      Framework, the California ELD Standards, and the California SBE-adopted
      core instructional programs for reading/language arts.
      -Working knowledge of AB 466/SB 472 Reading Professional Development.
      -Experience conducting interactive presentations with large and small
      groups of people and coaching teachers to use effective instructional
      -Working knowledge of state and federal programs to support low
      performing schools, including SAIT and PI.
      -Extensive knowledge of research on effective instructional practices
      for English Learners, English/second language development, and
      professional development practices and design.
      -Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      -Evidence of skill and ability to work effectively with clients,
      colleagues, and organizations.
