The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation
Director/Associate Director of Broad Academy Support Services

The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation seeks a Director/Associate Director of Broad Academy Support Services to cultivate, analyze and facilitate investment opportunities in districts where alumni of The Broad Superintendent's Academy program have assumed a leadership position. Today, 34 graduates of The Broad Academy are leading school districts as superintendents across the country. The Director/Associate Director will provide strategic advice to Broad Academy graduates, as well as develop a portfolio of investments that will provide Broad trained leaders with the tools and resources (monetary and non-monetary) necessary to drive district and student success.  The Director/Associate Director will work closely in a liaison role with The Broad Center to integrate and align support services to the Academy's most promising graduates. This position is based in Los Angeles, CA.

      Responsibilities:
      •    Seek and develop new grant opportunities that balance the goals and mission of the Foundation with the needs of Broad Academy graduates.
      •    Work with early stage organizations to develop initial business plan ideas.
      •    Analyze proposals and business plans, design programs and help develop and approve budgets.
      •    Manage relationships with Broad Academy district leaders and assist them with strategic planning.
      •    Develop network of resources and personnel that can support Broad Academy district leaders in executing reform plans.
      •    Provide management support to grantees for full duration of grant, and identify those grantees that have the potential to engage in deeper, philanthropic-supported, strategic reform work.
      •    Present investment recommendations to the Foundation.
      •    Work with the Director of Communications to showcase success of grants based on demonstrated success of The Broad Foundation investments.
      •    Work with the Director of Policy to determine which grants--based on their results--have local, state, or federal policy implications.
      •    Work with evaluators to develop and implement assessment mechanisms for each grant in the portfolio.
      •    Represent the Foundation at relevant conferences, meetings, and networking events.
      •    Maintain knowledge of leading challenges, issues, and personalities in the major urban school districts that are relevant to achieving the mission of the Foundation.

      Qualifications:
      •    Five to ten years of professional work experience – relevant experiences might include experience in K-12 education and/or strategy consulting.
      •    Strong analytical capabilities. Analytical capacity to understand small or large, complex organizations and the ability to conceptualize, conceive, manage, implement, and evaluate projects.  Ability to devise workable scenarios for bringing initiatives to scale.
      •    Energy and perseverance necessary to find opportunities for high-leverage investments, and the judgment and organizational savvy required to assess the probability of success of the ideas, the people, and the organizations to implement them.
      •    Superb writing and communication skills.
      •    Personal presence and communication skills to represent the Foundation in diverse forums and situations, and the ability to interact with senior level school district representatives.
      •    Experience working in a start-up, entrepreneurial, and/or fast-paced environment. An entrepreneurial spirit a must.
      •    Leadership capabilities needed to work with the Founder, Eli Broad, other program staff and grantees to develop proactive grant-making and assistance programs and to persuade others to join in the project.  Experience managing relationships with leaders of large organizations a plus.
      •    Demonstrated personal commitment to the cause of improving urban public education systems, together with determination to find creative ways to improve upon traditional structures.
      •    Interest or experience in public policy and politics is preferred.
      •    Minimum of an advanced degree (e.g. MBA, MPP, JD).
      •    Willingness to travel up to 50% domestically.

      Personal Characteristics:
      •    Personal reputation for integrity and ethics.
      •    Management and operating style suited to work in a small-office setting with limited support staff, where teamwork among peers is highly valued.
      •    Ability to work effectively under pressure and to handle a heavy, diverse workload.
      •    A self-starter. Highly motivated.
