      Project Director

The Mass Insight Education and Research Institute, an independent
Boston-based non-profit that organizes public schools, higher
education, business, and state government to significantly improve
student achievement, seeks qualified candidates to fill a new Project
Director position. The position is available immediately.

      General Description
The Project Director will work principally on Mass Insight's
initiatives in the area of school turnaround – one of the
organization's two primary focus areas, supported over the past two
years and in the coming year by grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation. He or she will work with the President and Senior Vice
President to implement a range of research, strategy and tool
development, advocacy, and strategic consulting programs all designed
to help states, school districts, and external partners accomplish
successful turnaround of failing schools at scale.

These initiatives are part of a three-year effort by Mass Insight to
launch a highly visible national center to serve that goal – and to
use dramatic, comprehensive approaches to failing-school turnaround
as a gateway to larger, more systemic education reform. The Project
Director will play a key role in helping Mass Insight build on its
emerging reputation as a national leader in school turnaround design.

      Principal responsibilities:
      • Organize and coordinate programs in Mass Insight's turnaround
      focus area, including:
 Working with internal staff and outside partners to conduct
research into effective school networks, school/provider
partnerships, and successful and unsuccessful efforts to turn around
      failing schools
 Analyzing relevant state legislation and regulations and
district contracts and developing effective policy templates
 Designing and helping to deliver strategic consulting
services to states and districts seeking to implement a more
intensive, integrated, and comprehensive approach to school
      intervention
 Engaging in outreach efforts to bring Mass Insight's research
and services to the attention of federal, state, and district
decision-makers and other education reform leaders nationally

      Competencies/experience required:
      • At least four to eight years of performance-based education
program management experience, with a strong emphasis on educational
      policymaking
      • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, succinct, and highly
      organized written work
      • Strong organizational, project management, analytical, and
      interpersonal skills
      • Strong knowledge of and interest in standards-based efforts
      to improve public schools
      • Strong client service orientation
      • Strong computer skills, including the ability to work with
Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and databases.

Profile: A senior staff member at a consulting firm, education non-
profit, or government agency with experience (direct or indirect) in
school reform, who seeks challenge and opportunity in catalyzing the
implementation of state-of-the-art reform strategies in urban school
districts across the country. This is a fulltime position; salary
      commensurate with experience.

About Mass Insight Education & Research Institute:
Mass Insight Education & Research Institute, founded in 1997, is an
independent non-profit that organizes public schools, higher
education, business, and state government to significantly improve
student achievement, with a focus on closing achievement gaps.

Mass Insight's education reform strategies are defined by two
convictions: that change at scale depends on the practical
integration of research, policy, and practice; and that only dramatic
and comprehensive change in high-poverty schools will produce
significant achievement gains. The strategies that Boston-based Mass
Insight implemented to help make Massachusetts a reform model now
inform the organization's national work on two high-impact goals:

 using Advanced Placement® as a lever to attain excellence in
math and science achievement and to transform school culture, and
 the successful turnaround of consistently under-performing
      public schools.

The organization, which was founded in 1997, is widely viewed as one
of the most effective statewide standards-based reform organizations
in the country, winning the National Alliance of Business's 2002
Coalition of the Year award, among other national recognition.
