      BUILD is a social venture located in the Bay Area with sites in East
      Palo Alto and Oakland, CA. BUILD's mission is to provide real-world
      entrepreneurial experience that empowers youth from under-resourced
      communities to excel in education, lead in their communities, and
      succeed professionally. By encouraging students to develop their own
      small businesses, BUILD extends traditional entrepreneurial education
      far beyond the classroom and provides students with real-world
      business experiences.

      Position Description and Definition of Success
      The Academic Program Manager is a critical player at BUILD,
      responsible for the academic success of all students in the BUILD
      Youth Business Incubator (10th-11th grades). The Academic Program
      Manager will be based out of our Oakland site and will report to the
      Oakland Site Director. This position provides a unique opportunity
      to contribute to the success of a young, rapidly growing nonprofit
      which has received national recognition.

      Criteria for Success for the Academic Program Manager:
      • Student retention
      • Number of students who show academic improvement through
      their GPA over the course of the year
      • Number of students enrolled in summer programs to improve
      their academic standing or college eligibility
      • Number of students who are UC and CSU eligible as rising
      • Other metrics deemed appropriate by the organization

      Position Responsibilities:
      The primary responsibility of the Academic Program Manager is to
      ensure that ~60 students achieve academic success, are on track to
      graduate from high school and will be CSU/UC eligible.

      • Manage Academic Incubator – Create a safe, structured
      environment every afternoon from 4-5:30pm where BUILD students gather
      for academic advising and assistance. Collaborate with Program
      Managers at other sites to maintain consistency of academic program
      across sites.
      • Plan and implement academic improvement measures to ensure
      College Readiness – Regularly monitor and assess student progress
      through transcript review, weekly progress reports (if necessary) and
      ongoing communication with high school teachers and counselors. Meet
      with students to create and discuss individual plan for academic
      success, paying special attention to course placement.
      • Enforce All Academic Policies/Rewards- Each quarter,
      determine which students will be put on academic probation and
      whether dismissal is necessary. Meet with parents and/or guardians
      when students are academically at risk. Develop creative strategies
      to encourage academic success.
      • Strengthen BUILD Tutoring Program – Recruit, train and
      maintain ongoing communication with volunteer tutors. Assess
      volunteers' skills and students' needs and match appropriately.
      • Manage SAT Preparation Program- Arrange a course schedule
      through Revolution Prep, managing the teacher relationship, selecting
      students for the course, and monitoring student progress.
      • Plan College Trips – Plan and coordinate all logistics for
      two college trips – (i.e. Southern California, East Coast, Northern
      California). Determine appropriate schools, determine process for
      student selection, and coordinate all logistics, including tours at
      the school, transportation, lodging, food, and parent approval.
      • Manage Summer Program Placement – Help students find
      rewarding summer academic enrichment programs and/or summer
      internships. Help students create professional resumes and

      • Excellent Ability to Build Relationships With Students –
      Candidates must be able to quickly develop a rapport with students
      and also be comfortable enforcing academic policies
      • Excellent Project Management Skills – Candidates must be
      detail-oriented, extremely organized and able to prioritize and
      manage multiple projects at once
      • Excellent Academic Advising Skills – Candidates should have
      experience with academic advising at either the high school or
      college level. Familiarity with the California State University and
      UC System is a plus

      • Excellent Communication Skills – Candidates must be able to
      communicate with multiple audiences, including students, parents,
      corporate partners, volunteers and high school personnel.
      • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth
      (experience with under-resourced youth preferred)
      • High Energy, Creative and Flexible – Candidates should be
      creative in their approach to building relationships with students
      and be willing to handle new and evolving responsibilities as
      directed by organization growth
