826 Valencia, founded in 2002, is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization dedicated
to supporting students aged 6 to 18 with their writing skills, and to helping teachers get
their students excited about writing. Our work is based on the understanding that strong
writing skills are fundamental to future success and that great leaps in learning can be
made when skilled tutors work one-on-one with students. We have developed programs
that reach students at every possible opportunity—in school, after school, in the evenings,
or on the weekends. Since we opened our doors, over 1,200 volunteers—including
published authors, magazine founders, SAT course instructors, documentary filmmakers,
and other professionals—have donated their time to work with thousands of students.
These incredible volunteers allow 826 Valencia to offer all our services for free. For more
      information, visit www.826valencia.org.

The Pirate Store and Events Manager serves as a liaison between 826 Valencia and the
larger community, working closely with a team-oriented staff to promote and fundraise for
the organization and its student programs through our street-front pirate supply store
and special events. Imagination and sense of humor are vital.

      Minimum Qualifications:
      - A deep commitment to and understanding of the 826 mission
      - Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

      - Enthusiasm for working with people of all backgrounds and ages
      - Good instincts and command of marketing and money-management
      - Proficiency in both English and Spanish

      Preferred Qualifications:
      - Retail management experience
      - Strong aesthetic and artistic sensibilities
      - Familiarity with Macintosh and design programs such as InDesign and Photoshop

Events coordination entails overseeing and attending all 826-sponsored events; managing
all event details including technical needs, scheduling, promotion, and volunteer
management; collaborating with community partners including performers, authors,
students, and other arts organizations; seeking fiscal and in-kind donations and
managing all related data; writing press releases and executing all PR as related to
promoting events; and updating and managing the events calendar and all related
      information on the 826 website.

The retail management aspect of the job entails overseeing and participating in all aspects
of the pirate store including inventory, buying, shipping and receiving; managing a staff of
4-6 part-time store employees plus a team of volunteers; directing the design of creative
products and window displays; maintaining the store's physical appearance; attending
      retail expos; updating and managing the store web site; marketing for 826 publications;
and planning and executing store events.
