      Position Description
      The 9th Grade Academic Program Manager will be a critical player at
      BUILD, responsible for managing the Entrepreneurs 1 program, an
      academic elective for 9th graders. S/he will manage BUILD teachers
      and manage the BUILD Mentor Program, recruiting, screening and
      training mentors from the local business and educational communities,
      as well as ensure a positive student experience. Reporting to the
      Regional Site Director, this position provides a unique opportunity
      to directly impact the success of a young, rapidly growing nonprofit
      that has received national recognition.

      Criteria for Success for the 9th Grade Academic Program Manager:
      • Successful recruitment of professional mentors to ensure a 2:1
      ratio in all Entrepreneurs 1 classes
      • 90% student retention in the Entrepreneurs 1 program
      • 90% mentor retention in the Entrepreneurs 1 program
      • Successful planning of three student showcases and the Annual
      Business Plan Competition

      Position Requirements
      Type of Position: Full Time
      Timeline: Start Date ASAP
      Support: support from BUILD program assistant, volunteer mentors, and
      BUILD staff (as necessary)

      Position Responsibilities:
      The primary responsibility of the 9th Grade Academic Program Manager
      is to ensure that ~100 students and ~45 mentors have a positive,
      rewarding experience and are prepared to move into BUILD's youth
      business incubator.

      • Manage E1 Teachers – Manage four E1 teachers, helping them to
      achieve success as defined by internal BUILD metrics. Observe
      classrooms on a weekly basis, and provide constructive feedback.
      Conduct weekly check-in meetings to problem solve student issues and
      stay abreast of classroom concerns.
      • Manage the E1 Mentor Program - Recruit, train and manage 45 young
      professional mentors from the Bay Area to work with a team of BUILD
      students one evening per week. Ensure mentor satisfaction through
      ongoing communication, working with teachers to resolve issues.
      Conduct mid-year and end-of-year surveys to determine satisfaction
      and success. Support volunteers in helping to keep students goal-
      oriented and motivated.
      • Plan Annual Business Plan Competition – Oversee all logistics for
      the end of year Business Plan Competition and three practice
      competitions, including the coordination of transportation, venue,
      judges and staff.
      • Manage Student Recruitment – Manage planning and implementation of
      BUILD's recruiting strategy to ensure a full class (27-30 students)
      at each school for the 2007-2008 school year.
      • Plan Enriching Field Trips and Guest Speakers - Plan one business
      related field trip for all students. Recruit, invite and schedule
      guest speakers on various topics. Plan one end-of-year college tour
      for all E1 students.
      • Help Students Improve Academically - Regularly monitor, assess and
      report student GPAs to BUILD and conduct one-on-one meetings with at
      risk students.

      • Excellent Project Management skills – Candidates must be detail-
      oriented, extremely organized and able to prioritize and manage
      multiple projects at once
      • Excellent Management Skills – Candidates must have management
      experience and should have a proven track record of helping staff
      (preferably teachers) achieve success
      • Excellent Relationship Building Skills – Candidates must have
      excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate comfortably
      in diverse communities and with various types of people (youth,
      parents, volunteers and corporate partners)
      • Minimum of 1 year teaching experience (experience with under-
      resourced youth preferred)
      • High Energy, Creative and Flexible – Candidates should be creative
      in their approach to building relationships with local corporations,
      small businesses and mentors and be willing to handle new and
      evolving roles as directed by organization growth
