      School Information Manager

GreatSchools is an independent nonprofit organization that provides a
free online guide to K-12 schools (GreatSchools.net). We are based in
downtown San Francisco and funded by philanthropists, corporations, and
foundations. Our mission is to provide parents with the information they
need to choose schools, support their children's education and advocate
      for educational excellence.

Our success rests on providing the detailed information that parents
need when choosing a school for their children, including information
about school programs, curriculum and special features. This
information is supplied to GreatSchools by school districts and school
principals through "Enhanced School Profiles" (ESPs), which are
currently available for schools in California and Arizona. To date,
almost 50% of schools in Arizona and 13% of schools in California have
created Enhanced School Profiles. The School Information Manager will
focus on increasing the number of Enhanced School Profiles in
California, Arizona and planned expansion states and on creating systems
for maintaining and updating this information on a regular basis.

      Specific responsibilities include:

Increase the number of Enhanced School Profiles in each in-depth state:
      (
currently Arizona and California; will expand into four additional
states including Texas and Florida by the end of 2002)
      * Utilize existing strategies and create new marketing approaches
for reaching school and district personnel and convincing them to create
      Enhanced Profiles
      * Develop strategies for working through school districts to
create and update Enhanced School Profiles
      * Meet Enhanced School Profile goals on a monthly, quarterly and
      annual basis for each state

Create scalable systems for gathering and updating ESP information:
      * Utilize a range of technologies, including email, phone, direct
mail, etc., to increase the number of Enhanced School Profiles
      * Work with engineering and editorial teams to simplify and
streamline the Enhanced School Profile development process
      * Manage systems for communicating with school and district
personnel and tracking their Enhanced School Profile activities

Build the GreatSchools brand among schools and districts:
      * Work with educator groups within each state and across the
country to raise awareness about GreatSchools and build the credibility
      of the organization
      * Create partnerships with these organizations, where relevant, to
help increase the number of Enhanced School Profiles
      * Develop and implement other brand awareness campaigns for
educators, utilizing existing distribution partners such as The Los
      Angeles Times

      Qualifications:
      Required Experience
      * At least two years of experience working with school and
      district personnel
      * Proven ability to "sell" an idea both verbally and in writing to
multiple audiences within the school system
      * Proven track record of working independently to accomplish
      specific goals and objectives
      * Experience in managing information systems to gather data, using
      telephone, faxs and online tools

      Required Knowledge:
      * Extensive knowledge of how schools and districts work,
specifically what motivates a principal or district administrator to
      respond to requests
      * Demonstrated skills at using written and oral communication to
successfully sell a product or idea
      * Strong project management experience and ability to coordinate
      projects across multiple departments
      * Quantitative data skills, including using Excel and other data
analysis programs to find, sort and display data
      * Basic knowledge of how the Web and Web sites work

      Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

      Personal Characteristics:
      * Highly organized, responsible and attentive to timelines and
      details
      * Independent self-starter and productive team member
      * Flexible and able to work in a fast-changing environment
      * Strong commitment to supporting and improving public schools
