      Director of Technology, Achievement School District 


      Location:  Nashville or Memphis, Tennessee; travel to school sites as needed 


      About the ASD: 


      The Tennessee Achievement School District is an unprecedented statewide effort dedicated to improving education for Tennessee’s most underserved students by transforming the lowest-performing (bottom 5%) schools to the top 25% within 5 years. As a “portfolio school district” based in the TN Department of Education, the ASD recruits, authorizes and supports high-performing charter schools and incubates schools through direct management. Currently, 68 out of the 85 bottom-5% schools in TN are clustered in Memphis.

      Summary of the position: 


      The DoT plays a critical role in creating a new standard for high-quality operations and services for our internal support team and our charter partners. The DoT will report to the Chief Operating Officer and have significant flexibility to implement his/her visionThis role will require long term planning, cross-functional coordination, team leadership, and frequent user training and support. 


      Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 


      Strategic Planning 

      • Plan and execute long-term implementation and maintenance strategies for software, hardware, data, voice, and other systems 

      • Develop the infrastructure to accommodate the ASD’s substantial year over year growth in multiple locations 

      • Track best practices and innovative solutions from other districts or organizations that may be used now or in the future to further our mission  

      • Oversee technology compliance with CIPA (Children’s Internet Protection Act) 

      Project management  

      • Scope, implement, and maintain scalable technological solutions that meet identified user needs in a cost effective manner  

      • Prepare detailed project plans including timeline, scope, and budget; Communicate these to stakeholders or other team leaders 

      • Guide project teams to each plan’s completion by leading meetings, overcoming obstacles, and driving work forward to ensure milestones are met 


      Team management 

      • Recruit, lead, and develop a versatile, skilled, and quality-driven team as needed; complement team members’ skills through the management of other internal resources and external vendors 

      • Supervise and guide external consultants or vendors as they execute technical projects or troubleshoot technology systems  

      User support / service level management  

      • Ensure excellent user support for end-user computers, software, printers and servers, and other systems through the management of a timely and comprehensive helpdesk team (or vendor) 

      • Oversee high-quality, accessible training on systems and hardware for support team staff 

      • Define service level agreements to hold technology vendors accountable to customer-focused orientation and goals 

      • Provide support for other technical systems, including communications, website, SharepointPowerschool (or other SIS system) and other such proprietary hardware/software 

      System administration 

      • Direct the implementation and maintenance of all technology architecture, including network, servers, workstations, connectivity, backup, and information security 

      • For hosted services, ensure ongoing server maintenance to maximize bandwidth, connectivity, uptime, and speed 

      • Coordinate the Exchange and Active Directory administration, including distribution lists, mailboxes, message routing, and storage, file permissions, etc 

      • Oversee information security, backups, and content filtering 

      Technology procurement and vendor management 

      • Manage the technology procurement process from start to finish, including vendor assessments, budgets, negotiations, and contracts 

      • Manage positive relationships with IT vendors, consultants and suppliers 

      Budget and grants management 

      • Oversee the IT budget and provide guidance for school budgets to ensure efficiency and preservation of assets 

      • Manage E-rate application, oversee E-rate funds, and support other funding applications 



      • Bachelor’s degree, ideally with technology, computer science, information systems, or similar focus 

      • Extensive experience managing or directing an organization’s IT department, in addition to several years managing tech support 

      • Knowledge of standard networking equipment and design standards (voice & data)  

      • Understanding of leading edge technologies, including various knowledge management platforms  

      • Experience managing and overseeing budgets 

      • Familiarity with the following preferred: E-rate; PowerSchool SIS; SharePoint
