      Special Assistant of Administration 

      Office of Safety

      The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Special Assistant of Administration. 

      DEFINITION: The Special Assistant of Administration plays an integral role in achieving the mission and goals of Newark Public Schools (NPS) by ensuring that all Newark’s students have a safe and secure place to learn. Specifically, the Special Assistant of Administration will assist in the design and implementation of safety systems and structures for NPS schools. This position reports to the Executive Director of Safety and will oversee personnel in the Office of Investigations. The Special Assistant of Administration works closely with district leaders, assistant superintendents, and principals to help ensure the physical safety of all district personnel and students. This position may also be responsible for other duties as required. 

      RESPONSIBILITIES 

      The Special Assistant of Administration will support the work of the Office of Safety and Security in a number of ways, including: 

      Research and operationalize best practices relative to school safety and security 

      Develop school safety plans to direct emergency responses 

      Coordinate and supervise the Office of Investigations 

      In collaboration with the Executive Director of Human Resources, recruit, employ and train school safety personnel as required 

      Ensure that both interior and exterior communication are effectively managed for all safety issues 

      Advise architectural design teams for construction and renovation projects relative to school safety 

      Completes federal, state and local reports, ensuring timely and accurate submissions 

      Collects and analyzes relevant data in order to inform safety and security practices 


      KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES 

      The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of the following: 

      Familiarity with New Jersey safety and emergency planning requirements as well as implementation best practices for large urban districts 

      Exceptional critical thinking and problem solving skills, including the ability to identify challenges and actively work to find solutions 

      Superb written and oral communication and facilitation skills. 

      Outstanding project management skills 

      Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with school leaders, colleagues and other partners 

      Ability to make data-driven and evidence-based decisions 

      Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail 

      Experience managing and developing staff 

      A past record of setting and achieving ambitious goals 

      Demonstrated ability to manage teams to achieve outcomes and to support the development of direct reports 

      Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint); most importantly, an intermediate knowledge of Excel and Access. 

      The ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment 

      A passionate belief in the mission of NPS and commitment to creating a safe learning environment for all Newark’s students 


      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

      College degree (B.A. / B.S)- preferred OR a HS Diploma with at least Seven (7) years of professional level experience in a large, urban school district OR in a field related to safety and operations 

      Experience in K-12 educational settings 


      REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Safety 

      SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION 

      Salary: Compensation is competitive and based on experience. 

      Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months 

      Union Affiliation: Unaffiliated
