LEAD Public Schools, a nonprofit charter management organization in Nashville, Tennessee, is building a network of public charter schools with a goal of doubling the college ready rate of low-income students in Davidson County by 2020. Scope of Responsibility
The Chief Financial Officer manages all financial, accounting, business planning and analysis, and budgeting work of the organization and all its subsidiaries, in addition to HR, IT, cash management, vendor relations, lease negotiations, and capital expense planning. Future work will include facilities identification and development and evaluating related financing options. The CFO will be asked to manage and establish sound processes and procedures in alignment with central office, board of directors, and school level functions – while maintaining strong support the organization on a day-to-day basis. As a member of the senior leadership team, the CFO will work closely with the CEO, COO, and finance committee of the board of directors to build an effective financial function capable of supporting the growth of a $16 million organization with 150 employees into a $40+ million, 400 employee, multi-site organization in the next five to seven years.
• Oversee the development and implementation of annual operating budgets for each campus and the central office, capital expense planning, and long-term financial modeling in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan.
• Supervise and collaborate with accounting staff (presently outsourced) to ensure timely and accurate production of monthly financial statements and analysis, related financial dashboards, fixed asset tracking, and careful management and communication of annual budgets, variance explanations, forecasts, and revenue and expense targets.
• Prepare and communicate key information to the leadership team, school directors, and finance committee on a monthly basis.
• Oversee the implementation of an effective purchasing function and well-designed system of internal control.
• Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior management team and provide support for all operational and strategic issues as they arise, as well as provision of strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
• Collaborate with internal staff and external consultants on the preparation of a long-term strategic plan and multi-year financial model.
• Support the development activities of the organization including review of key grant proposals, donor reporting, including federal reimbursement based grants, in conjunction with the Director of External Affairs and the Development Director.
• Ensure that finance staff maintains all accounting records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting
Principles, Government Accounting Principles, and all applicable Federal and State grant guidelines, and ensure timely completion of the audit and tax returns each year.
• Maintain a multi-year cash flow projection and cash-management model that includes restricted/designated funds as necessary.
• Manage all banking, corporate insurance, and lending relationships with selected financial institutions, lenders, and insurance firms.
• Manage the HR and payroll function including time and effort reporting.
• Coordinate all audit and tax activities and support the development and pursuit of the finance committee’s annual goals.
• Ensure an effective RFP/bidding process exists for applicable contracts and vendor services.
• Evaluate and oversee all benefits negotiations, thus providing the most competitive packages for all LEAD staff members.
• Ensure the creation and implementation of all finance-, HR-, and IT-related policies, procedures, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward.
• Develop and manage accounting staff (outsource), HR staff, and IT staff, and also guide larger multidisciplinary teams outside of direct span of control.
• Collaborate with other members of the senior management team to ensure centrally supported solutions enhance LEAD’s evolving strategy, address specific school needs, and meet a range of compliance responsibilities.
• Provide schools and central office departments a high level of customer service and assist them in identifying and solving problems.
The preferred candidate is a seasoned and mature leader with at least 8 – 12 years of broad finance experience, ideally including audit experience with a major firm, followed by experience gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership, S/he will ideally have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, internal control, and reporting), HR, and IT for an organization >$10 million.
The CFO will have the following experience and attributes:
• A minimum of a BS and CPA/CMA; an MBA is preferred.
• Mature and proactive, with direct experience in supporting a rapidly growing, multi-location entity.
Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting.
• Skill in examining, developing, reengineering, and recommending financial, HR, and technology policies and procedures.
• Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into operational and financial models.
• Demonstrated experience in real estate financing, construction, and/or bond financing is a plus.
A collaborative and flexible style with a strong service mentality, and meticulous attention to detail.
• A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
• An absolute, stone-cold Excel and Powerpoint guru and experienced with a comprehensive accounting and financial reporting package. Experience with Great Plains Dynamics and/or Tableau is a plus.
• An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills.
• Strong commitment to developing team members.
• Demonstrated commitment to the social sector and a passion for the organization’s mission is essential.
