181Leadership Public Schools follow-up opportunity
- Dec 2, 2002
Many attendees at the 11/12/02 Edupreneurs event in San Francisco expressed interest in learning more about Leadership Public Schools (LPS). Mark Kushner, the founder of LPS, spoke at the event and wanted to pass along the following information about this new organization.
Leadership Public Schools (http://www.leadps.org) is a new nonprofit organization with plans to open 25 charter high schools throughout California over the next 10 years. Leadership schools will serve ethnically and economically diverse student bodies and be located in or near low-income neighborhoods. Initial communities being considered include East San Jose, Oakland, Richmond, and Marin.
LPS was founded by Mark Kushner, the founder and initial Principal of San Francisco's award-winning Leadership High School (now a separate and distinct organization). Leadership Public Schools will build on Leadership High's outstanding track record:
• 99% college enrollment
• 82% students of color
• Superior academic performance: 8 out of 10 on California's Academic Performance Index (API), and the highest possible score on the API Similar Schools Rank (10 out of 10).
• 96% passage rate of 10th graders on California Language Arts High School Exit Exam.
Leadership Public Schools recently submitted a charter petition to the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), with a proposed opening in the Fall of 2003 or 2004. For those interested in supporting LPS or learning more about the charter approval process, the charter petition will have its first public hearing at the OUSD Curriculum and Technology Committee Meeting on Tuesday, Dec 3rd, 4:00pm. The meeting will take place in the Board Room of the Paul Robeson Building (OUSD central office), 1025 2nd Avenue, Oakland, 94606. This is a critical first step in the approval process, as the Committee will be looking for evidence of broad-based community support for the charter proposal.
