  • I wish I could make every publisher read this article. I would buy many more scholarly books in e-format if the e-books were easier to use. Many scholarly publishers make e-books available in .pdf format only, and often they charge the full hard-cover price for the e-book on top of that. I'm willing to pay the equivalent of a paperback for an e-book, but I'm not willing to pay the...

  • Wow, this news is upsetting. Thank you for sharing. I expected that Adobe would collect data on books we are reading with Adobe DE, but not that it would collect data on everything in my Adobe library, and especially not that it would collect data on epub books I store elsewhere (e.g., in Calibre). That article from Joseph links to this one: http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/10/06...

  • As a reader (though not in your niche), I prefer a low-priced intro to a series, and I don't feel exploited by paying more for the rest. I don't think I would pay $9.99 for a self-published book by someone I'd never heard of, no matter how long it was. So I agree that your second option is better. Those who actually write and sell books might know better, though. Beth On Sat, Feb...

  • If you haven't yet merged your Fictionwise and Barnes & Noble bookshelves, you may not want to, at least not if you own a nook "1st edition" (the first nook model). Apparently, if you have too many books on your BN shelf, whether or not the books have been archived, you can no longer sync your nook 1e with your BN shelf. The sync process times out after a certain number of titles...

  • BN just resent me my transfer code with a note that they were resending all of them because of reports that some people hadn't received it. I hope that means you will get your transfer code soon! • Ironically, I'd already sideloaded the fw books onto my nook too! :) I have been looking forward to getting the online nook shelf to sync with ipod touch/ipad/computer. Don't always have my nook with me. I'll archive a few titles at a time and eventually all will be well. I'm looking forward to learning about worthy successors to Fictionwise. I'd grown to trust fw and it is sad to...

  • Everything you say makes sense. I think the issue isn't books being inaccessible but BN promising something and then disappointing with the follow-through. For example, the nook shelf has advantages over sideloading if you're reading w/multiple devices, but managing the titles is harder than it ought to be. If I were Chris, I'd be upset about wasting time choosing books based on a...

  • Hi Roy, I got an email that had a link that I clicked. Then I waited a couple weeks before getting another email giving me a code and another link. A few hours after that, my shelves were merged. I'll forward the emails to your gmail privately. Maybe they have info that will help. Beth On Sun, Dec 9, 2012 at 11:20 AM, Roy Lewis wrote: > Sure am glad you are able to murge your books...

  • Oh, man, I would be furious! My sympathies! I'd suggest that you call BN customer service but this doesn't sound like a problem they are likely to fix. It's a shame . . . . • Hi Brenna, I agree, the shelves on the nook are wonderful! But they do not, as far as I can see, sync to the nook app, the "nook for pc" software, or the www store bookshelf, or at least they don't sync from my nook 1e, so everything else is still cluttered. Maybe someday the shelves will sync, or maybe they sync from the newer nooks? You're right that the nook itself has a search...
