"QUEEN of HEAVEN: The
Virgin Mary as the Sacred Feminine in Medieval and Renaissance Music and
Art"; a multimedia concert experience featuring songs, dances and
artwork from the 12th through 16th centuries, presented by some of the Valley's
most dynamic interpreters of ancient music.
We invite you to experience the
Cult of Mary as it once was: passionate, devout and metaphysical in its scope
and significance. From the rhapsodic chants of Hildegard of
Bingen, through the Andalusian-influenced Cantigas de Santa
Maria of Alfonso the Astronomer-King, to the pilgrim dance-songs of the
Red Book of Montserrat, through to the glorious polyphonic
tapestry of Josquin Desprez, the music celebrating the Virgin
Mary is at once earthly and transcendent.
Join us as we perform these
masterworks of Early Music, featuring the "earth mother" alto of local
musicologist and Hildegard scholar Charlotte Miller, the
intense voices of Cappella Sonora, the celestial harmonies of
the all female vocal group LadyFayre, and the lusty voices and
instruments of Bartholomew Faire, featuring harp, guittern,
hurdy-gurdy, shawm, bladder-pipe, recorders, pipe & tabor and a battery of
During the performance, images
of the Virgin, illuminated manuscript pages and contemporary depictions of
music-making will be projected on no less than two screens. We have
consulted numerous sources to find images that will perfectly complement the
"QUEEN of HEAVEN" concert experience.
