Channel 4 documentary and campaign
- Hi everyone,
I have had a talk with a journalist who is working a TV documentary
about Durham. (Copy of email below) Patrick is going along and I think
probably knows more than I do about what is happening.
Something to discuss on Tuesday. :-)

Thanks for chatting with me about our ‘No Car Day’, it was interesting
to hear your point of view about the parking situation in Durham. I’ve
attached a copy of our press releases and included below a bit about the
documentary series and the involvement we’d love to have from people in
We’re filming the last in a three part documentary series for Channel 4,
due to broadcast in late February/early March. The series follows our
presenter, professional problem solver Kris Murrin as she looks at
traffic problems and congestion in three UK towns and cities. For this
final documentary she’s in Durham and is organising a ‘No Car Day’ on
the 15th of January which will be supported by the council, local
traders, Durham FM and Arriva buses amongst others. They’re inviting
residents and people who work in Durham to try out alternative forms of
transport for the day and leave their cars at home.
There’s a big event organised in Durham town square, Durham FM will be
broadcasting live and we’ll have free bike maintenance and workshops as
well as a mass cycle ride through the town. We’re really keen for this
day to not just be a one off, we want as many people as possible to hear
about it and be encouraged to try cycling or walking to work, or any
other way they can ditch their cars for short journeys. For this reason
we’d love for jugglers and unicyclists or other performers to come along
and support the event and help entice people and press to take notice. I
particularly like the idea of having unicyclists present and hopefully
taking part in the mass cycle ride as cycling is the main alternative
form of transport we’re promoting.
Additionally we’re having a count down to the day starting from the
Tuesday 8th a week before which we’d love to get a unicyclist and
juggler or two down to in order to help publicise the event as we’ll
have press their.
If you can’t make it perhaps you can suggest an idea we might have
missed? Please call (07739 422124) or email
(gwyn.williams@...) if you have any questions. If you can
make it down to help out we can sort you out with some lunch on the day.
I really hope you can help.
