  • Thanks Wayne for opening our eyes. It all sounded strange to me when I read it. I shall be at LAC next month so I will try to get their view (if possible). • To all Listers who sent me help and advice. On Tuesday morning last I sent a plea for information about locating a person called Herbert Franklin Graham in the 1911 Canadian census for Ontario. Would you believe it? By Wednesday evening I had received 22 offers of help from our members, including one from a long-time friend who lives in Red Deer. They had found the person in...

  • Hello: I am looking for a person called Herbert Franklin Graham born April 21, 1901. His parents married in Stayner, Ontario in 1893. I tried looking at Automated Genealogy for 1911 but it seems to be a very time-consuming task. Ancestry.ca didn't help either. What is the best way to look for this person in the 1911 census? Thanks for any suggestions you can make. Rene

  • Lorna: Thanks to everyone who answered my query about Newfoundland. I appreciate your help. It would be interesting to know what other comments you received. In the meantime, I e-mailed a friend who is a well-known Newfoundland author and his reply is: St. John's, Newfoundland should be sufficient. A site called "Grand Banks" has much information re NL ancestors. We were a...

  • I was very sad to hear that "our" Judii had died. The news came as a great shock to me. She was very involved with AFHS and her special interest, Mennonite genealogy. She was always willing to help our members with advice on any aspect of our work as family historians. Several years ago, when I was struggling to learn Paint Shop Pro she came to my house to demonstrate some of its...

  • Many thanks to Doreen/Susan for the undernoted information. Lindsay Patten is in Australia sailing, and has no internet connection! I was speaking to his mother, Marilyn and she tells me that he will not be home before June 15, 2011, and then he will commence to fix it. He is the only one that does it She is very sorry that this happened but she has no way to help us out. I...

  • Judith: I "googled" page occupation and here is the reply: What does a page(occupation) do? The best description, would be a gofer. A page runs errands, ushers people, and generally does the bidding of those he/she works for. It is hardly a glamorous job, however some have gone on to lucrative careers in show business, Regis Philbin for one. Cheers, Rene Dussome

  • Just a brief comment. The National Archives is not in Kew Gardens - it is a short walk from Kew Tube Station. Kew Gardens are in the opposite direction. Well worth a visit, by the way. • I have been helping my next-door-neighbour to research her family in England and have been going great guns until I hit a snag - her paternal grandmother came from Ireland!!!! Co Monaghan, to be exact. I have found her on both the 1901 and 1911 census indexes. Where do I go from here? Any advice will be welcome and I thank you in advance. Rene Dussome
