The Ukrainian SIG will be meeting on November 29 from 2-4. We will have a special guest – a person I have known for a long time from my days as head of a corporate library. I never knew though she was Ukrainian or interested in genealogy and I’m sure she would say the same about me. Someone from AFHS tipped her off that there was a Ukrainian SIG and that I was involved.

So welcome Elizabeth Malinowski to our SIG and as our first guest speaker of the 2008-2009 year.

Elizabeth was born in Poland, studied English at the University of Maria Curie Sklodowska in Lublin, Poland. She came to Canada in 1978 and received her BA in English from the U of C, then her MLS from the University of Western Ontario. She has been (and still is) employed by Shell Canada since 1984 as an information analyst, senior librarian, information specialist, knowledge management specialist –all pretty much the same thing! It means she knows how to find resources. Can you believe it! She just started researching her genealogical past in January 2008, but has already found over 1300 family members, many of them through using microfilm at a Family History Centre in Calgary.

Although born in Poland, both her father and maternal grandfather were from the Volodymyr area of Ukraine, see http://wolyn.ovh.org/opisy/fundum-10.html so I think this means she is ¾ Ukrainian, but it maybe more. If I am wrong here, she can straighten it out at the meeting!

      November 29, 2008 Ukrainian SIG meeting 2-4.

From 2-3 p.m. Elizabeth will talk about how she went about growing her family tree through microfilm and other sources. We will then discuss how we are building our Ukrainian family tree – what resources we have found useful.

From 3-4 p.m. She will demonstrate the portal "moikrewni" ("my cousins”), which she uses to keep track of her growing family tree. She will talk about the pros and cons. Then she is interested in who is using what to keep a track of your family, so we will have a discussion about who is using what and the pros and cons of those.

Email me if you are planning to join us, just so I have a count and can be sure to have enough munchies. If anyone else also wants to bring something for the snack, please let me know.

      See you there!
