FW: Scan for Spyware, Adware and Other Unwanted Threats
Zone LabsAnyone have experience with this? I 'bit', since Zone Labs appear to be one of the good guys. But:* it works via installing a couple of things on the computer* it works only via their website (can't initiate from the pc alone)* the results are lengthy (on my pc), not printable* the results suggest that cookies themselves can be spyware* the results show 'registry' locations for the 'pests', but doesn't provide info on how to remove them* some of the 'prests' are simply things that permit sitetracking software (like our own http://www.sitemeter.com/default.asp?action=stats&site=sm81906census> to determine whether a visitor is a first-timer, or a repeat visitor (I wouldn't include this in MY definition of a pest)Until now I've thought of cookies as generally benign and sort of a form of artificial intelligence - the more one visits a particular site, the more the cookie is aware of one's uses/searches and future uses/searches can be thus more effective And, I don't see any FAQs that really define "pests" or permit the user to manage the definition (the way one can e with e-mail-screening blacklists and whitelists).I'm also very wary about editing my own registry.Other thoughts? If it weren't ZoneLabs, I would have blown this away already and not consulted with you all.

Do you already have spyware, unwanted cookies or other Internet security breaches on your PC?
Take the free PestScan online detector and get a status of your machine. It's a quick and easy way to scan your PC for pests in the places they're most likely to be hiding.
How The Scanner Works
PestScan from PestPatrol runs right over the Web and will search for spyware, keyloggers, adware and other unwanted threats hiding on your PC. PestScan helps interpret the scanner results and explain:
- How did these pests get onto my PC?
- How do I remove these pests?
- How can I protect myself against pests in the future?
What Exactly Is A "Pest"?
Pests is the collective term PestPatrol uses to describe non-viral malicious codespyware, hacker tools, trojans.
PestScan System Requirements
Operating system: Windows 98, ME, NT 4 or later, 2000, or XP
Browser: Internet Explorer 4 or later
All pests share these common characteristics: most people don't know anything about them, didn't invite them in, don't know they are present, and don't want them in their system.
With thousands of files in today's computers, no one could be expected to know what every single one does. And, without the technology to help find pests, they can live and thrive in your system for a long time before anyone finds out they're thereby which time it may be too late.
