      NEWS RELEASE

THE CITY OF CALGARY LAUNCHES FAMILY HISTORY WEEK

Family history, or genealogy, is regarded as one of the fastest-growing pastimes/hobbies in North America, and
especially in Alberta. The aging population and the internet are principal contributing factors. Therefore, the City of
Calgary, for the first time ever, has officially recognized the week of October 19 to 25, 2003 as FAMILY HISTORY WEEK, a
week to promote and encourage interest in family history research.

It is a principal objective of the Alberta Family Histories Society (AFHS) to increase the public awareness of this very
rewarding pursuit and to inform the community of the limitless resources that are now at its fingertips. In addition to
the shelves of new AFHS library there is an enormous fund of print and electronic information available at the Calgary
Public Library, the Glenbow Museum, and the Family History Centre of the LDS Church, to name just a few of the many
      readily-accessible sources.

At 4 pm on Wednesday October 15, in the atrium of the Calgary Municipal Building, Alderman Barry Erskine, on behalf of
City Council will officially launch FAMILY HISTORY WEEK. You are invited to witness and record this special community
event. An opportunity will be provided to interview several active genealogists who will speak to the significance of
family history research in the cultural development of our lives and offer some interesting personal stories of
      discovery.

During this Week we will publicize information about the many resource centres in Calgary available to assist those
looking for help in ‘finding’ their ancestors. Lists of these locations as well as helpful internet websites will be
      available for your use..
