      Area with freedom, generally by Royal Grant, from Royal Officials and jurisdictions. Marriages could be performed in some Liberties and, being exempt from normal ecclesiastical jurisdiction, they became, until 1734, local Gretna Greens (e.g. Peak Forest, Derbyshire).
