Group Description

The Digital Text Community is for serious, in-depth discussion and information exchange, technical and non-technical, of the digitization of “paper” publications, such as books, periodicals, etc. The focus is heavily on public domain texts, but not limited to that. (Note this group does not promote nor encourage unauthorized digitization of copyrighted works.)

Allowed discussion topics are quite broad in scope and not restricted to scanning, OCR/key-entry and proofing — they may also cover archiving, markup, formats, metadata, copyright, end-use, etc. Topics may also be non-technical, such as the planning and organization of text digitization projects. “How-To” queries, proposing new ideas, announcements, etc.

Note that discussion may, at times, be quite technical. You are welcome and encouraged to start your own less technically-oriented topic.

The “Prime Directive” of this group is based on the Golden Rule. When posting a message, keep the substance and tone of your message objective, cordial, and respectful. Focus on thoughts and ideas, not the person.

Messages are lightly moderated, primarily to filter out those which:

  • are off-topic,

  • violate the “Prime Directive,” and

  • may cause unwanted disruption.

Commercially-oriented messages, so long as they are relevant and objective in tone, may be allowed at the discretion of the moderators.

The moderators may take any action deemed necessary to maintain this group’s integrity.

This group is co-founded and moderated by Lee Passey and Jon Noring.
