I will be there! I look forward to my second meeting ever. :)
In preparation for tonight's gathering, I have been thinking about the question that was asked last month: how can I contribute to the Club?
Two things immediately come to my mind:
1) If there ever is any need for help with maintaining the website, please do not hesitate to let me know. While I am not a professional web designer, I have developed and maintained numerous websites over the years. I will be happy to help with that, if needed.
2) I would love to foster a
more close interaction between Delmarva Stargazers and Delaware State University. As you might know, we have a strong NASA presence on campus due to several research grants funded by the Agency, as well as Dr. Noureddine Melikechi's (the Dean of the College of Mathematics, Natural Science, and Technology) involvement in the Curiosity Mars Rover project. We also have a strong research/education program in optics. I would be happy to organize perhaps a talk given by one of our faculty members, or maybe a visit of the Club's members to DSU, and any other activity related to that, if there is interest. Also, as a matter of fact, together with another faculty member at DSU (from the Physics and Engineering Department), I am currently trying to set up an extracurricular astronomy program for our students. We actually have an observatory, which is incidentally located just above my office, that has not been used for years.
We have recently purchased a new telescope for that observatory, and are in the process of planning for its installation. Having said that, while both the other guy and myself are very excited at the prospect of setting all that up, we could definitely use some advice from Delmarva Stargazers. We are nowhere near as knowledgeable as you all are.
I will be happy to answer any questions about these ideas tonight.
