      Mojo's 100 Cult Heroes

      PIXIES
The people: Black Francis (unearthly scream, guitar) and Joey Santiago
(guitar) found Kim Deal (bass, vocals) through an advert for someone into
both Husker Du and Peter, Paul and Mary.

The music: Arguably the last truly original rock band. Kurt Cobain claimed
Nirvana 'ripped off' their quiet/loud dynamics. Earliest is best: Come On
Pilgrim (1987, 4AD) and Surfer Rosa (1988) are brutal, Doolittle (1989),
their commercial breakthrough, is slicker but still thrilling.

Where are they now?: Black Francis now records as Frank Black. Deal went on
to form The Breeders. She is currently recording the much-delayed follow-up
to 1993's The Last Splash with Steve Albini producing. Drummer David
Lovering played with grunge-metal mupets Candlebox, and he and Santiago
worked together, unsigned, as The Cocktails.
