      The Buddha didn't create the interconnectedness of monastics and laypeople because he wanted the monks to be entangled, but encouraged the monks to be as independent as possible in their practice, with their outside material needs from the laypeople coming only as freely given gifts rather than as hoarded wealth, investments and debts.
