Martin Murray wins GLAA Award
- Congratulations to Martin G. Murray, winner of a Distinguished Service Award from the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC. Martin was recognized for founding the Washington Friends of Walt Whitman, and his research on Whitman's years in Washington (which include his biography of Peter Doyle, his work to uncover Whitman's previously unattributed journalism, and his Whitman tours of downtown DC). The award also cited Martin's critical work to create the "DC Celebrates Whitman" festival honoring the sesquicentennial of the first publication of Leaves of Grass in 2005.GLAA states that they selected Martin for this honor because of all his efforts "to foster an appreciation of the legacy left by the Great Gray (and Gay) Poet during his stay in the Washington area." An awards ceremony will be held at the Washington Plaza Hotel on April 22.
