What are we going to do about the files on Cybalist? Do we need to split
the messages into blocks of say, 2000 messages, and assign them to
volunteers to uplink? I suppose we need to create hyperlinked indexes from
message numbers to files in the archive. At least we can use the visible
names, rather than the obscure URLs that they get translated to.

I'll start the ball rolling by volunteering for one such block.

      Richard.

P.S. What are we doing about Phonet and Nostratic? I've got Nostratica
      covered.

I've created a specimen index as
        http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phoNet/files/attachment_index.htm .
However, the critical activity is to get the attachments archived in
some fashion. We can tidy up the indexes later.

We've only got one weekend in which to get this job done, if we're
        going to do it.

        Richard.

            > copy the attachments?

            Brute force!

The process I am following is as follows.

            1. Look at a list of messages (e.g. via
            http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cybalist/messages/8120 )

            2. If there is no paperclip to the right of the subject, there are
            no attachments.

            3. If there is a paperclip, look for an attachment box in the
archived message. It will contain the word 'download'. Paperclips
may be a false alarm. Some e-mail editors seem to have caused them
by returning the message replied to as an attachment. Such
attachments, and some others, are actually incorporated into the
archive text, so that when you look at the archived message, there
            aren't any attachments.

Starting just before message 15000, Piotr's replies in particular
are marked with a paperclip but no longer include attachments. The
false attachment indicators seem to thin out after Message 17000, so
I'm provisionally assigning you, 'ikpeylough', the 18,000's and
19,000's should you wish to help.

            4. Download the attachments to your machine.
            5. Upload them to the att directory in the files area.
            6. Make a record of which attachments came from which message. I am
logging this information in an HTML file, such as
            http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cybalist/files/att/index_1-2+4-
15.htm , which I'm editing using Notepad. I'm recording the message
number, the file name when downloaded, the file name in the message,
and the subject of the message. The last two items can be cut and
            pasted from the message itself.

So that we don't duplicate work, I've been recording the allocation
            of messages in
            http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cybalist/files/att/archival.htm .

The simplest to avoid duplication if anyone else wishes to help is
to lay claim to a block through a message in this thread. I'll try
to keep the above file up to date. So, for the record, the
            following blocks are already allocated:

            1-15,999 Me, Richard Wordingham

            18,000 to 19,999 'ikpeylough'

            Richard.

I'm going to do 16000-16999 now, which will leave only 17000-17999
                      unassigned.

Yes please, because I think one can easily get tired enough to start
missing the download boxes. If you want to tart up the sound
                              changes, you could describe them

romanian.sc Sound changes from Latin to Romanian

latin.lex Latin words exemplifying sound changes to Romanian

                              but that's a luxury.

I'll put them in the index.

OK, I'll double-check that section. As for Msgs 11747 and 11798, their
senders are no longer our members, and the attachments were infected
with viruses. I normally deleted such stuff immediately from the archive
(Yahoo! didn't do that automatically at the time) but I seem to have
omitted these two. The messages have since been "defused" in the sense
that the attachments no longer exist, but I haven't deleted them now for
fear of disturbing the numbering of all the messages that follow. Just
                                  ignore them.

P.S. The phantom attachments that accompany many of my messages during
the period in question (and seem to have "infected" the e-mailed replies
to them) were some kind of side-effect of using Microsoft's Outlook
Express 5 and HTML format. When I switched to Mozilla's mail browser and
decided to take care to sent plain text only, the false attachments were
                                    gone.
