If the contacts are ruined, they can almost always be restored. What
you need for that is a flat surface to put the fine crocus cloth on.

(In my last email, I called what you need "emory cloth" by error, the
abrasive is the same but when it is put on paper, it is caled emory
paper and when it is on cloth it is called crocus cloth).

Disassemble the bug, and CAREFULLY rub the contact (face down) in a
figure-8 pattern being careful to press down on the center as to not
round the contact (not really a problem as long as it is uniform).
Another method is to cut a band of crocus cloth and wrap around your
finger like a bandage and "massage" the silver (towards the finger) in
      a figure eight pattern.

If it is extremely bad (which it isn't) use course crocus cloth for a
few wipes, then medium for much more and then fine. The idea is to
level the surface, then with the fine cloth to polish it.

Clean with denatured (or rubbing) 90% alcohol. and let dry, then work
      on the other three contacts.

Then when all is dry, polish with Flitz. It has an ingredient which
bonds to the silver to prevent tarnish and is excellent for contacts.
Clean by rubbing off with cotton pads or cotton puff. Do not use
paper towel - or use cotton tipped swabs with caution - avoid scarring
by directly hitting the wooden stick of the swab.

Paper towel should not be used on any mirror surface, just glass
cleaning microfiber, Turkish towels, cotton balls or fleece.

        Subject: [cw_bugs] Replace Vibroplex contacts?

After a few months of all sideswiper sending, my bug has again caught
my attention. It is a 1953 Presentation, my favorite bug so far.

A friend told me Vibroplex will replace the contacts. I just called
Vibroplex and they said it is $40.50 to replace each contact on the
contact post, the contact spring, and the sliding dash contact.

Is that service worth the money? Or can I do a similar repair on my own?
