      Thanks, guys! It really wasn't hard to clean. All the "before" photos
      were used to help me put the bug back together after completely
      disassembling it. I soaked the metal parts in cleaning solution used by
      watchmakers and then gently got rid of what little dirt remained with a
      soft brush. After just as gently cleaning the base (not with the watch
      cleaner) I used black shoe polish on it.

      Now I'll print out the image you pointed me to, Jack, to give it a more
      authentic look.
