        Carlos,

        only 2.5 inches.
A larger base like the standard Vibroplex of 3.5 inches wide is much
more stable. The Blue Racer 2000 has a tendency to move as if it
        wants to tip over!

So make a wider base - but paint the color you like!

If your friend is wanting to make a key just for the fun of it, I
would suggest buying the book by W R Smith on Vibroplex restoration.
The book will give a lot of suggestions on how to make some of the
springs and such. If he is wanting to make a key to save money on the
purchase price, it would be cheaper to just buy a vibroplex than to
buy the book and all the supplies to make a bug. The book alone is
              $55.00 plus shipping.

Here is a link to the book:

The problem, is not the price in USA, the problem, is when the key arrive at Portugal, with chipping and peage, is more or less $150 to $200. 73 s. Carlos,

The 100th Anniversary bug is $158 - and this is a deluxe model with a
jeweled movement (something you are not able to make on a lathe) -
shipping to EU is $37.00 = total = $195 which is EU 133.

If you can make this key - which you cannot with the jeweled bearings
                    - for EU 133, I will eat the key!
