      HI.
I purchased this McElroy 1938B De Luxe last week here in Italy.
The finish De Luxe should be "marble" (I own another 38B De Luxe model with that famous base paint), but this one has chromed base.
McElroy MFG. Co. never offered chromed Mac Keys (according to W1IMQ's book and others); perhaps this key is a "special order" or it was chromed at some point of its life by one of the previous owners.
Nobody knows the truth....but it looks good and works fine !!

I have heard that chrome parts started in automobiles in 1920s.

Even if it is not authentic, it is a beautiful key.

I do love the marbelite finish though.

Yes  a  beautiful work of art.

They don't make 'em like that nowadays. The best bug maker today is Vizkey in my humble opinion. I have both the right-angle and vertical versions.

Or you could cheat, like I sometimes do, and use a single lever paddle hooked up to a JA3KAB bug circuit. It generates perfect dits on the thumb side and manual dahs on the finger side. Also, the spaces between the dits  and  dahs are  perfectly controlled.

I don't usually admit to it but there you have it.

David, you were mentioned in dispatches by Steve N6TT who I often work. Pity you and I never QSO'd. Your part of USA is hard from here. Although there have been some openings around 1600z on 12m lately.

            Hello, Fabio!

Nice looking key.  It looks like someone put a lot of work into that key, but I doubt if it was a McElroy job.  Possible, but Ted shied away
from the "distracting" chrome finish until later.  Basically, his castings were rough and covered smooth with a tick paint similar to the Japanning
process or used black wrinkle to cover the not so smooth castings.  They were smooth some what, but not to the degree you need for plating.
If it is chrome, I would really suspect a later plating by an owner because that vintage were more nickel plated then chrome, but not always.
Chrome was becoming more popular about then.  Vibroplex switched from nickel to chrome in 1940 with their keys.

I am polishing and reassembling my '28 #6 this morning, but I am going to crash for awhile.  It has a nickel base.  When I finish the #6,
I am going to finish putting my '38A Deluxe back together, finally.  The hospital stay sure put me behind on everything.

              Yes, I agree.
Ted McElroy hated the "distracting" chrome finish until he made the S-600 "teardrop" (I own it too.)
However chrome plating was not popular yet in late '30es. and morse keys were Nickel plated and offered "for two dollars more" since early days.

I am sure about the aftermarket finish: the nameplate is chromed too, so this is the evidence.
If the key was plated at the factory by McElory mfg. Co. the nameplate should be "black and white".

              Thanks you all.

                      Yes Fred, I agree.
And I don't know the reason why the nameplate wasn't removed before plating. It''s so easy to do....

Both the quality of keying from the McElroy and from the Bonucci are excellent.

                        Fabio Bonucci = FB.

I always wondered about the origin of FB, and now I know it was an abreviation on the quality of the handwriting or fist of IKØIXI who is Fabio Bonucci or FB and also KF1B. < grin >

My joke is poor but Fabio is as wonderful as usual.  Wonderful, wonderful, my dear FB.
