Re: [cw_bugs] Adjustment help for Blue Racer (Mobile, AL version)
You are going to get lots of suggestions however I once had a similar issue and I finally traced it to a bad connection at the silver contact to the adjustment screw. Try turning the actual contact to see if it's loose on the dit contact screw. Also make sure all the vertical round posts are tight by checking the screws from underneath. Sometimes the old fiber washers begin to deteriorate.

I picked up a recent-vintage Blue Racer at the Slidell, LA hamfest last year and have been using it for a while... it's my third bug, after a 1969 standard and a 1957 Lightning. This one seems *VERY* touchy on the dits - there is a tendency to not hold the same adjustment even for a single QSO.I can adjust the dits to the point where I can get the points to barely close at rest - it will give dozens and dozens of dits before getting scratchy - and will sound fine - and then the next QSO it will start sending scratchy sounding dits.I have placed a .01 uf cap across the key line (inside the plug housing) on all 3 of my bugs, and it seems to help the other two on modern rigs. This one has me baffled. The pendulum arm, at rest, is barely touching the damper.Any other suggestions would be appreciated!73 de Chuck, WS1L--===================Chuck Chandler===================
- Recent vintage blue based Blue Racer 2000 bugs (not a real Blue Racer) are an Original model on a narrow base. Despite the painted bottom, it is a Deluxe model key with synthetic ruby bearings which do not conduct electricity. A good key but with some problems.
Vibroplex modified the way it grounded the Deluxe keys. They removed the grounding braid and two small machine screws which attached the braid to the main lever and to the base of the key. Now the ONLY connection is the dot tension spring. Make sure you have sufficient tension on the spring to avoid loss of continuity.
Also make sure it's clean.
I wrote some instructions for cleaning and using bugs here:
