Re: [cw_bugs] The conductive strips
- I have looked at my keys which range from two 1921 Originals through several manufactured in the 50s to a three year old Anniversary. The appearance varies with some deterioration obvious with age. The 1921 models, now 89 years old show a dull grey finish with some rust spots. The 50s era show a little bright finish at the ends and dull finish in the middle. My newer key is a bright finish all the way. I would speculate that the material is plated steel strap. I would speculate that the plating is Cadmium. There would be no reason to plate these with Nickel or other expensive material. Bear in mind that these keys were manufactured for the professional land line and later radio telegraph operators. Not wealthy collectors and they were intended to give good service for 10 or 20 years, not to be display pieces 50 or 100 years later. I have done nothing to my keys for restoration and would not replace these strips as long as they are making good contact which mine all do. Good bolts are cadmium plated and really rust resistant. Cheap bolts are thin cadmium plated and intended to look good until the package is opened.Willis 'Cookie' Cooke

My 1926 Original has grey connecting strips - I can't say if it is just dull nickel plate or paint, but I suspect it is plating of some sort. My 1915 Blue Racer type has the same.

As I was looking over my restoration project, a question came to mind.
I have seen these strips both nickel plated brass and just plain brass.
As I wish this restoration to be as true as I can make it, what is/were the
rules regarding the conductive strips. I have seen them both ways over
various vintages. Anybody know the criteria that determined which type
