Venturing Summer Opportunity - NCAC Culinary Academy

      This summer the National Capital Area Council (NCAC) is sponsoring the Culinary Academy at Camp Snyder in Haymarket, VA, Sunday through Saturday, July 24 through 30, 2011.
      • Participants will be staying at the camp (in platform tents), but will be cooking in real kitchens (This is not outdoor BSA cooking -- this is training in culinary school cooking techniques and procedures and leadership for teens).
      • The program is for Venturers, Explorers and Boy Scouts (coed) ages 15 and older.
      • The program is limited to 24 participants. Youth are not required or expected to have prior culinary instruction to participate.
      • We will have Steve Weiss, Internationally recognized pastry chef and competitor in multiple TV "Food Network Challenges" as a guest instructor.
      • Additional guest chefs will be announced soon.
      In addition to the above, the goals planned for the Academy are:
      • The basics of safe food prep and sanitation.
      • Take field trips to a farmers' market for seasonal items and back to camp to prepare the bounty of the season
      • Take a field trip to a major regional food distribution center
      • Learn knife skills by preparing some interesting international cuisine.
      • Cover a variety of notable classic basic culinary techniques like soufflé, yeast dough's, béchamel, pie crust, roasting, etc.
      But every moment will not be spent with knives, potholders and carrots in your hands. `Down-time' activities such as going to the camp swimming pool, an evening of shooting sports, movie night and/or other fun activities are planned!!
