      Jeffrey,

I am with my son in Park City, Utah, so I have no access to materials. I
      do
deal with the question under the rubric "Christ" in Ante Pacem. With
      rare
exceptions Jesus is young, clean shaven and white skinned. There is no
      beard
until after Constantine. The image then is moving toward that of an
      emperor.
Some thoughts: we don't know the color on sarcophagi. Very rarely
archaeologists have found yellow paint in the hair of Jesus. I know of
      one
dark Jesus (a fisherman). It is printed in my Inculturation book. I
      can't
recall for certain, but there may be two pre-Constantinian images with
beards. They would be Jesus as teacher.

      Have a good New Year.

      Grady
