Geza Vermes, in Jesus the Jew, wrote in reference to the NT and early church
use of the title of lord in application to Jesus, specifically about its
origin, evolution, intent, possible confusion of the Tetragram with
Adonai/Kurios/Mara, "the most useful and constructive step would seem to consist in a
reconsideration of the nature of the Aramaic and Greek speech of the Jews in NT
times, a study to be performed for, as it were, its own sake, and not, as in the
      past, for NT exegetical purposes."

Has there been such a study in recent decades that is accessible to a layman
and can be followed by someone who does not read Aramaic and struggles with
Greek and even more with Hebrew?

      Thanks,
