      Dear List,

I am writing in regards to a book called, The Birth of Christ Recalculated
by Ernest L. Martin. Apparently Mr. Martin reached the conclusion that
Jesus date of birth is September 11th, 3 B.C.. Although I have not read his
book, the information I find on the web concerning how he reached his
September 11th, 3 B.C. birth date is based on celestial charts and a
lunar eclipse that occurred shortly before the death of Herod that is
apparently reported by Flavius Josephus in the Antiquities. Of course
after the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks many have jumped all over this to
substantiate Prophetic Signs. I assume that there has been tremendous
speculation as to the date of Christs birth, but does Mr. Martins claim
hold anymore weight than the rest of the speculations of Christs date of
birth? Just out of curiosity, what is the most widely held scholarly belief
as to the actual date of Christs birth?

        Hi,

Someone wrote to ask about where Peter was buried. There is an article in
this month's Bible Review about this very subject. The first page of the
        article is on their web
        site. http://www.bib-arch.org/bswb_BR/bswbbr2001f2.html

        I hope that this helps.

I've heard the 3 BC date before, but not 9-11 (at least I don't
remember it). Working from vague memories, a lot of early
chonologers pointed to 3 BC. The main difficulty of course
is the death of Herod in 4 BC, but I read an argument for
Herod actually living to 2 BC. I never followed up on the
evidence. I'll see if I can find where I read this and post
a citation if I find it.
