Group Description

This group is dedicated to the appreciation and study of Craig Kennedy, Scientific Detective. The Craig Kennedy series of stories and novels were written by Arthur B. Reeve between 1911-1930s?.

Kennedy was one of the best and first of the science-based, gadget-wielding, action adventure detectives. This series is the bridge between British-styled Victorian mansion mysteries leading into the modern science-based detectives culminating in Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Thorndyke and the later American Pulp Fiction explosion. Kennedy is both a direct descendant of Holmes and the ancestor of Doc Savage. His style has been endlessly imitated (for instance the later kids series Danny Dunn was called "Scientific Detective") and returned to prominence during the Pulp Era, even launching Scientific Detective Monthly in the early 1930s.

The Kennedy series often showcased new (for that era) devices and breakthroughs in science, such as new chemicals, hypnotic drugs, poisons and antidotes, bacteriology, lie detectors, long-range listening devices, seismographs, aerial photography in rockets, invisible airships, etc. Kennedy was especially keen on chemistry and often performed lab work that is today known as forensic science in solving cases.

Kennedy adventures include The Silent Bullet, The War Terror, The Treasure Train, Guy Garrick, The Social Gangster, The Exploits of Elaine, The Poisoned Pen, The Ear in the Wall, Gold of the Gods, and The Dream Doctor.

Reeve helped cowrite several adaptations of Kennedy into film and TV over the Twentienth Century. Arnold Daly appeared as Craig Kennedy in several films in 1914-1915, including the 1915 "The Romance of Elaine," which also guest stars Lionel Barrymore. Jack Mulhall appeared as Kennedy in the 1936 film "(The Amazing Exploits of) The Clutching Hand." There also was a TV series in 1952 titled "Craig Kennedy, Criminologist," with Donald Woods as a revamped Kennedy.
