*

"2) Israel was a theocracy, ruled

MOST of it's history it was a monarchy.

As
such, there was a division between church and
state
(e.g., the king was not permitted to
perform
      sacrifices). Yet ...depending upon the
nation's current
      apostasy... church and state
cooperated in common
      religious goals, and were
mutually
      supportative.

THAT being the Reformation model for
      Church-State
relations: Cooperation and mutual support.

Pagan
rulers -like the Roman Empire in NT times-
offer us
      little analogy. And, indeed, today
"render unto
Caesar" is our standard for dealing
with modern pagan
      governments ruling over the
US and the UK.

Again,
civil government is "a minister of God"
(Romans 13:4
NASB). It has ...as an institution...
been deputized
by the Lord (Romans 13:1) to act
in His
      behalf.

It can do that either faithfully (e.g.,
      16th.
Century Geneva, Switzerland) or unfaithfully
(e.g.,
      Clinton-Blair atheist/pagan governments).

National
Covenants may be out of style, but never
out of God's
will. Think about it: Does the
Most High prefer
secularism over Belief ? Are we
to be Christian in our
      private lives, family lives,
community lives, and work
      lives, but NOT politically ?

Neither the Old
      Testament nor the New dichotomizes
civil governance
      ...or, a nation... from religious
faith.
Accommodation was made in the NT for the
then-current
reality of a pagan Roman Empire.
That ~wasn't~ an
      endorsement of either paganism or
pluralism
