The original and current OPC/PCA form of the WCF XXV:2 is:

The visible church, which is also catholic or universal under the gospel (not confined to one nation, as before under the law), consists of all those throughout the world that profess the true religion; and of their children: and is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, the house and family of God, out of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation.

I'm not sure where the alternative is from.

Fathers and Brethren (and sisters too):

I am currently in an Ecclesiology class at Puritan Seminary (on a lunch break). My Free Reformed professor quoted from the Westminster Confession on the church and it was an unfamiliar quote. The bottom quote was how he quoted it.

Does anyone know the history behind this change of the Confession XXV?

      original confession:
II.  The visible church, which is also catholic or universal under the gospel (not confined to one nation, as before under the law), consists of all those throughout the world that profess the true religion; and of their children: and is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, the house and family of God, "out of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation."

      the alternate reading:
"through which men are ordinarily saved and union with which is essential to their best growth and service."

            Nathan,
This is the language the PCUS adopted in 1939. The various Plans of
union between the PCUS and PCUSA and others of 1949, 1953 and 1956
contain this phrasing, and while the PCUS ultimately at that time did
not merge with the PCUSA under any of these Plans, the change was
adopted by the UPCUSA (PCUSA and UPC) in 1958 under the 1956 Plan of
union. The phrasing is in the UPCUSA/PCUSA Book of Confessions as well.
            Sincerely,
            Chris Coldwell
