Jonathan Edward's Volume 24 from Yale University Press Available
Yale University Press has announced that Volume 24 of The Works of Jonathan Edwards is now available to ship. This is by far the largest of all their volumes, as it contains 1472 pages, which is four inches thick and weighs over 6 pounds. This volume is entitled Jonathan Edwards Blank Bible. 'JE's "Blank Bible" is constructed of leaves of foolscap interleaved between the pages of an Old and New Testament. In this rebound volume JE wrote biblical commentary on all books of the Bible.' (Editor's comment Works, 15, 3 n.9)
And as you can tell from the page count (1472) it wasn't very blank after a lifetime of scribbling. It is a companion to Notes on Scripture, which is volume 15 in the Works - published in 1998. The "Blank Bible" was to be two substantial volumes in the Yale Edition (24). The editorial introduction is by Stephen Stein editor of volumes 5 & 15.
In 1730, Jonathan Edwards acquired a book-like, leather-bound manuscript containing an interleaved printed edition of the King James Version of the Bible. Over the next three decades, Edwards proceeded to write in the manuscript more than five thousand notes and entries relating to biblical texts (though paradoxically he called the manuscript his "Blank Bible"). Only a fraction of the entries has ever been published. This volume presents a complete edition of the "Blank Bible" accompanied by an informative introduction, multiple appendices, and an extensive index.
