16905RE: [Covenanted Reformation] VERITY!!!
- Aug 13, 2010Theocracy can be defined as rule by God and his word.
But, a narrower definition is rule by a church or its leaders. Such were the claims of Pope Boniface VIII in his 1302 Unam Sanctam, in which he claimed to possess all ecclesiastical and secular authority from God.
This latter definition is often in people's minds when they hear the word Theocracy. To them Theocracy equals Ecclesiocracy.
The scriptures support neither Ecclesiocracy, church over civil goverment, nor Erastianism, civil government over church.
Knox, Calvin and the Westminster Assembly did advocate the civil magistrate as a minister and servant of God with obligations to restrain outward violations of the first table of the law.
Certainly, government without religion is impossible. All law is based upon some religion. It will be either the religion of the Bible or a form of man worship, humanism.

Subject: [Covenanted Reformation] VERITY!!!
Howdy,Thomas Carlyle:"In other words, he [John Knox] strove to make the Government of Scotland a Theocracy.Theocracy, or Government of God; understand that this was their Law, supreme over all laws.
Theocracy, Government of God, is precisely the thing to be struggled for!!!"Sincerely, Eric
