How about taking an old Win machine, set it up with KpyM Telnet/SSH server (www.kpym.com) and a DOS type communications program; connect a serial cable to a COM port and the 1802/other serial controlled system; and run PuTTY on your main computer. You can SSH in to the server, run the comm program and connect to the 1802 from anywhere (even outside through the internet).
Also, see: http://www.vitamincm.com/reusing-anreusing-an-old-pc-as-a-server/ if you need any help in setting up the server.
