Now, for something completely different...
How about taking an old Win machine, set it up with KpyM Telnet/SSH server (www.kpym.com) and a DOS type communications program; connect a serial cable to a COM port and the 1802/other serial controlled system; and run PuTTY on your main computer. You can SSH in to the server, run the comm program and connect to the 1802 from anywhere (even outside through the internet).
