      Yes. In the present instance, I meant specifically the analysis of the 'free' vowels as consisting of a 'checked' vowel plus a consonant (y, w, r/h), e.g. the MOUTH vowel as consisting of the TRAP vowel plus /w/. (This idea dates back at least as far as Bloomfield's (1933) _Language_.)
