Hi Jamie, you must be referring to "Commentary of Things Old and New" by Cui Bao of the Western Jin Dynasty and his commentary on the Rites of the Zhou周禮?
      Thanks for your insight.

After the Analects, I'm planning to read through the Daodejing, and discuss Chad Hansen's and Hall & Ames' recent translations, but I guess not on a list devoted to Confucius... So I will post it on the Daoist Text Symposium list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Daoist_Text_Symposium/ also very slowly since I'm mainly reading Western philosophy these days.

Thomas' explication of the Buddhist underpinnings of Zhu Xi's interpretation is neat, and Cui Bao's 古今註 makes it clear that even in the 周禮, the character 肆 in such a situation only meant to display wares for sale. Zhu Xi's imposition of the word 'government' tells us more about him than about the early text.

Thanks to Thomas for his writings over the years, always thoughtful.

      best,
      Jamie
