      Clear Day

Jerry Lawson, legendary founder of The Persuasions,

to turn upcomingDenver a cappella concert into

star-studded event on Saturday, March 26.

“One of the best singers of the last 50 years” to appear at

      Harmony Sweepstakes—the region’s big a cappella competition.

DENVER (Mar16, 2005) — In every century, a few artists emerge as giants in their genre. In the a cappella world—where pure, natural, singing talent is never more nakedly featured— no one disputes that Jerry Lawson is one of those giants.

For the past 40 years, the legendary Lawson has fronted The Persuasions, arguably the best known a cappella group in recent memory. Their infectiously fun, never over-produced songs filled 22 albums and left a giant footprint in a small music genre always overshadowed by the much bigger, slickly-produced commercial rock market.

Lawson will appear as a special guest—and virtual royalty—this March 26 at the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes, the biggest and most important annual a cappella concert featuring the Region’s eight best up-and-coming a cappella groups.

As music writer Rip Rense put it, "By any fair measure, Lawson is really one of the best singers of the last 50 years---up there with Sam Cooke, Brook Benton, Jerry Butler & Nat King Cole."

The Harmony Sweepstakes concert is also a competition, making it an especially exciting night of entertainment.

Each group—chosen by an auditioning panel—prepares intensely in order to emerge as the most exciting and talented performers. A panel of experts will judge the performances. Any style of music can be performed, so long as no instruments—only voices—are used. The winner will go on to represent the region at the International Harmony Sweepstakes —and hopefully take home the top international prize.

In addition to being special guest, Lawson will be one of the four expert judges who pick the winning group, along with six other awards.

The show takes place at acoustically rich Teikyo Loretto Heights Theater, at 3001 S. Federal Blvd at W. Dartmouth in Denver . Producers expect to fill the hall.
