20th Annual "Harmony Sweepstakes" A Cappella Competition in March to Feature Region’s Best Talent

Eight of the best regional singing groups will compete in all-vocal public concert.

DENVER, Colo. (February 6, 2004) — Can the a cappella singing phenomenon that’s been sweeping our region’s schools and performing venues for over a decade launch a group talented enough to beat all international competitors?

Colorado will be a step closer to knowing on March 6, 2004. That day, nearly a thousand avid fans and curious new listeners will pack Gates Concert Hall in Denver for the 20th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival.

Starting at 7pm, the region’s 8 best groups will perform their most compelling a cappella arrangements. Any style of music can be performed. A panel of judges will rank the performances based on skill, originality and presentation. By the end of the night, the Rocky Mountain region will have a winner.
      Here's the field:
      Curious Gage (Ft Collins CO)
      Face (Boulder CO)
      Inpulse (St Paul MN)
      Lodo Air Band (Morrison CO)
      moosebutter (Provo UT)
      No Better Cause (Lincoln NE)
      Raging Harmonies (Westminster CO)
      Transformed (Littleton CO)

And the winner will be the Rocky Mountain’s choice to compete against 7 other groups from across North America—and hopefully win—at the International Harmony Sweepstakes Competition in San Francisco in May. This year marks the 20th National competition, which became international last year by producing a winning group from Australia, "Idea of North."

The local event, now in its 15th year, takes place in the area’s premier new venue— acoustically rich Gates Concert Hall, part of DU, at University Avenue and Iliff.

The Rocky Mountain region produced a champion once before. In 1993, local group the 17th Avenue All-Stars took the regional competition and later the National Harmony Sweepstakes Championship. Each year, this a cappella phenomenon grows in popularity, making the competition stiffer and more exciting.
This year’s event is sponsored by Flesher-Hinton Music Company, Colorado’s largest commercial music resource, headquartered in Denver. The Colorado Vocal Jazz Society, a 20 year-old non-profit organization will produce the event.
