- Feb 21, 2006I watched this movie again a week ago. I agree with your appraisal of Mr. Firth's performance and how it didn't follow the book, which as I recall had a lot more about Greit's brother and her thoughts.I was really struck by the portrayal of the harshness of life in that time and place. Really no one had it good. One could be an artistic genius and still be so constrained by one's patron and economic condition that you're basically a servant. Of course, a servant girl really has it bad.Although Tom Wilkinson's character (the patron) had power he was so enslaved to his vices that he'd never be happy. As for Ms. Johanson's performance, I do like her so I wasn't so critical. I think she has more depth than most young actors. I thought it was wise of her to do a period piece and she did resemble the subject of that painting. Now that you mention it, some scenes when she was less of a reactor or victim would have made the film even stronger.Cheers,Susan

I watched the above movie this month. I thought Colin did an excellent
job. I wasn't so sure about Scarlet....she stood around with a blank
look on her face. The movie didn't stick very close to the book
either. The movie never showed that Griet got married and had children
and that the artist left her the earrings in his will.
